Parking in Vancouver

Where can you park in Vancouver during and after your move

So you’re moving into your new house in Vancouver and you’re trying to park your car. As a popular portable storage and moving company in Vancouver, we know this battle well. You try to park somewhere on the street, but you notice that it’s filled with buckets as far as the eye can see! It’s a question we all ask ourselves at one point — where can you park in Vancouver?

Why are there buckets in these parking spaces? Can I park there?

Finding a parking spot for your car in Vancouver before and even after you’ve moved into your new home can take a little bit of know-how. Buckets are commonly used in neighbourhoods as placeholders.

That doesn’t mean they’re legal. Since a street is city property, residents can’t reserve those spots indefinitely. But be nice to your neighbours. Ask them politely if you can park there to avoid stirring up trouble. If you make it clear you live in the area now, they’ll probably be glad to let you use the spot.

Where can you park in Vancouver once you’ve moved in?

You can park your car in front of your new home for as long as you want in an unmarked road. But if the street says “permit only” parking or “no parking except residents” signs, you may need to buy a city permit. Keep in mind this only applies if your car is in working condition, insured and licensed. If not, it will be considered an abandoned vehicle, which is subject to towing bylaws.

However, it can be tricky to find a place to park in Vancouver sometimes. If your street is unmarked, non-residents are allowed to park there, albeit for a limited time. If you constantly find yourself struggling to find a spot, a residential parking permit may help you find more options for allowable parking zones in your neighbourhood.

So where can you park in Vancouver once you have a residential permit? Well, you get priority parking over non-residents in certain “residents only” areas. This will give you more options to park your vehicle. Of course, there are a few more details you’ll have to go over, which you can find here. You will also have to obey restrictions involving distances from driveways, intersections, fire hydrants and more.

How long can I park my moving truck in Vancouver?

Non-residents aren’t allowed to park in the streets forever. Between 8:00am and 6:00pm every day, do not park your vehicle for more than 3 hours in front of residential or commercial properties that you do not own or work at.

There aren’t any explicit instructions on the City of Vancouver’s website for how long a moving truck can park in a residential street. But to be safe, try to keep it there for three hours tops. If you have to keep it there for longer, it might be wise to at least change its position on the street so you’re not blocking the same houses for a long time.

Where can I park the moving truck or storage container if I’m moving into a street that has meters and reserved parking privileges?

You need to go the City of Vancouver and get a temporary special zone permit three days in advance of your move.

Go to the city’s engineering services desk in person and apply. If that doesn’t work for you, you can apply by phone or email at 604-871-6730 or engineering.clientservices@vancouver.ca.

Contact the city ahead of time, just to be safe

Parking laws can sometimes contain grey areas. Rules may change depending on circumstances. So the best thing to do while planning your move is to contact the city ahead of time and ask them any questions you may have. That way you can have peace of mind that you won’t get dinged on any bylaw violations.
