Installing a house bar, after you’ve moved into a new house
Once you’ve moved into your new Vancouver home, it’s natural to want to have friends over for a housewarming gathering! And for many people, a good house bar can make for a good party. So for this week’s topic, we’ve decided that we’ll cover some basics about how to setup a house bar after you move in.
Tips for moving wine glasses when setting up a house bar
Wine is often a staple drink for many people seeking to entertain guests, or for those who want to relax on their own. That being said, a home bar often isn’t complete without a good selection of wine glasses. As movers, we’ve had plenty of experience transporting delicate bar items, so we’d be happy to share some tips for moving wine glasses.
From experience, we’ve found that boxes with multiple individual slots, or cell packs, are often the best way to move glass sets. You can often purchase moving boxes online at places like uline.ca, for example. However, there are other ways. Try going to liquor, glassware and home improvement stores. Ask vendors if they have any cell boxes or packaging that they plan on throwing away. Sometimes, you might just get lucky and receive a few boxes for free!
Once that’s been taken care of, try wrapping each individual glass with either bubble wrap or a an equivalent packaging material before starting your move.
The same applies for other delicate glassware. Items such as glasses, pints and mugs can often be moved just as well with cell-packed boxes.

Design ideas for house bars
House bars don’t need to be extravagant to get the job done. As you can see here, many are simple — a tasteful cabinet with storage space for liquor, complete with utensils for mixing drinks. On the other hand, you can go with very elaborate designs which you can see here. Finally, Martha Stewart also has some great pointers on how to setup a house bar, which we’d suggest you look at.
Some considerations include the type of counter you will have for your bar. In this blog, we’ve discussed the different properties between marble and granite, which are two very popular materials for bar counters. We’d advise you check it out, as it could help you make a better informed decision on countertop choices.
When selecting wood cabinets, it’s pertinent to consider the types of wood. Every wood has its own character. Some have features that are visible regardless of the finish applied while others have more subtle markings. They all have varying durability and are selected depending on the desired effect needed for a liquor cabinet. We’d recommend checking out the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s resource for woods before selecting a cabinet.
Lights and space
Lighting and location are also key things to consider. Some drinks don’t do well under direct sunlight and others should be served chilled. Look at the layout of your house and try to see where and when sunlight travels throughout the day before installing the home bar.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help!
We know that designing a home bar after moving in can be a little overwhelming. With all the options to choose from, it can be easy to feel a little confused.
