Free Packing course for moving customers

Monday, June 7th, 2010

If you’ve ever had to move, you’ve had to pack. One of the worst part for most people when moving is packing. However, a staggering 90% of customers choose to pack themselves.

The number 1 reason to self pack is to save money. The reason customers think they’ll save money is because they feel packing really won’t take that long.

I had a similar experience when I ordered a truck load of gravel one time for my house. The gravel company asked if I wanted to hire their bobcat operator to spread the gravel out for me.

To save money, and feeling like it wouldn’t take that long, I decided to do it myself. After about 3 hours of shoveling, I looked at the pile of gravel and it didn’t look any smaller than when I had started. I ended up ordering the bobcat service and the whole job was done in 20 minutes.

It’s really the same with packing. But as long as I live I will never convince 90% of the population who live to not pack themselves.  So the next best thing our company can do is to open up our training facility to our customers to show them how to pack. Even if they already know, this 30 minute course will show customers how to pack better and faster.

Many customers who have completed our course all of a sudden realize how much there is to do and schedule our packers to come in and get the job done.

Some things covered in the Free Ferguson Packing course include:

  • packing dishes
  • packing artwork
  • packing books
  • packing lampshades
  • packing pots and pans
  • packing glasses
  • packing hanging clothes
  • packing dresser drawers
  • packing shoes
  • packing anything else you may have questions about

If you’re interested in attending our complimentary course, contact your moving consultant for more details. If you have not been assigned a moving consultant yet, contact Patricia (inside sales coordinator) in our office for more details. 604-922-2212

Lynn Valley Days Parade rained out

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Well, yesterday was a wet and soggy day for a parade. Each year North Vancouver organizes a parade for “lynn valley days”.

There’s a traditional parade with local merchants and local organizations. Upon finishing, there is a large park that gets converted into a carnival. Normally there are thousands of attendees. This this year it was dismall and cut short due to the bad weather. They have rides for kids like bouncy castles and minature trains and some games. All of the funds go support the local lions club.

Unfortunatly, it looks like they may have lost money this year with the record low turnout.Ironically, the next day sunday was pretty good for weather but everythnig in the park was already gone.

Maybe next year the organizers can make the parade last for 2 days instead of just 1.

Movers in Whistler BC

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

whistler moversDid you know that Whistler is a world class ski destination? Whistler also boasts a large summer program that thousands also flock to annually. You may be surprised to learn that the annual population of Whistler BC is only 9800 permanent residences.  How does such a small population provide the necessary services of such a large amount of visitors?

The answer is that each year approximatly 16,000 workers fly in from Austrailia on work visa’s to cater to all of Whistlers tourists. Some of the best activities which explore the area are described by guides from another country. Each year a lot of the workers rotate back into the groove but many more have to learn about the area. Since they’re only dealing with tourists who don’t know better, the guides simply get a brief orientation and a script to memorize.

The whole purpose of moving to Whistler isn’t to work for money, the purpose is to party and experience the fun culture and amazing friendships and worl class activities Whistler has to offer in their free time.

If you’re thinking of moving to Whistler, contact Ferguson Moving & Storage. Whistler movers since people first starting moving there. We also have whistler storage availability.

Tips for saving money with movers

Tips for saving money with your movers

if it’s at all possible when you’re moving, create a floor plan of your future house. Some people find it works best to use graph paper. Then use small pieces of card board to simulate your existing furniture. If it won’t fit on the paper then chances are it won’t arrive and you’ll have to get rid of the furniture.

If your sofa is a different color than the rest of your furniture, you may not want to move it. Often times you can replace your appliances and furniture cheaper than you can get it reupholstered before moving it.

Don’t fall into that thinking I might need it someday. Why would you bring a riding lawnmower into a condo? Get rid of any rules that you don’t have any place to use them. And don’t forget crap is crap so get rid of that junk that you don’t need or else he’ll be filling up your new attic.

Some people have a large library. If you’re one of those people, then you will want to condense it down as much as possible.

Check with your movers about moving plants in some cases outdoor plants need to be moved by a professional landscaping company. Especially for large plants that are left outside in large pots which gets filled with rain and are very heavy. If your Vancouver movers attempt to lift these heavy pots they will simply crack and break. This will also mean you have a large mess that you have to deal with.

urban area vancouver movers

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Are you considering moving to or from an urban vancouver area neighbourhood? There is a lot to plan and you’ll have to find a moving company that understands the urban area rush that comes with the territory.

Some things your movers will have to consider is parking permits, parking restrictions, elevator reservations, moving time restrictions, respecting the needs of others in the building, providing security for other tenants and security for items being moved onto the moving van.

There is also a speed component to urban rush moves that many moving companies miss out on. You can’t waste time on an urban rush move. You have to hustle and go quick and careful or else your deadlines will not be met.

In addition, most buildings have elevator fees and deposits. If your moving and storage company is late, then you could lose your elevator deposit. Even worse is if you are not moved out on time, the new owners could be trying to move in. If their movers are forced to wait because the condo is still full, then you’ll be paying for the downtime of movers you didn’t even hire!

You can relax if your moving company that you hired is Ferguson Moving & Storage, we have you covered with top quality staff that you can depend on. That’s why we’ve been in business longer than any other urban movers in vancouver.

Thanks for dropping by.

Canadian Association of Movers news update

CAM ACTIVITIES

As you will see in the following activity update, April was a very busy month for your association. Topping the list were the production of the membership directory, informing members about application of the HST, and addressing an advertising challenge in Alberta.

CAM DIRECTORY
CAM’s spring 2010 issue of its magazine and member directory, The Canadian Mover, is in the mail to you. It has articles that include a member profile, hiring practices and social networking. Have a look. Let us know what you think. And check your listing – it may need some updates.

HARMONIZED SALES TAX
CAM received and circulated some recent information on the implementation and application of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) in British Columbia and Ontario. Movers should be well practiced in its use as the rules are similar to those for the eastern provinces that already have it in place.
• For moves, GST or HST is applied based on the province of delivery.
• For storage, GST or HST is applied based on the province where the goods are stored.
A few complications exist for services invoiced before May 1 and for moves that take place over the
July 1 transition date. A chart related to the application of HST is attached.

INCLUSION OF GST/HST IN ESTIMATES
CAM had a member query regarding whether or not tax must be included in an estimate. In Ontario, the Ministry of Small Business and Consumer Services advises that the Consumer Protection Act requires that taxes must be disclosed in an estimate. It’s probably the same across the country, but including the applicable tax on an estimate eliminates any possible surprises for the consumer when it comes to getting paid for a move.

ALBERTA TREASURY BRANCH
Early in April, the Alberta Treasury Branch (ATB) began an advertising campaign that members felt demeaned the moving industry. CAM wrote to the president of the ATB and received an immediate response from Nolan Berg, the ATB’s vice president of marketing. Mr. Berg stated that the ad campaign was an attempt at humour and there was no intent to demean the moving industry. He stated that the following remedies would be implemented immediately:
• The print campaign would be stopped and ads in other media would not continue when contracts expired.
• A poster with the ad and a tagline (attached) would be placed on the community bulletin boards in all 165 of the ATB’s branches. The tagline reads:
To make sure these aren’t your movers, call a professional.
Call the Canadian Association of Movers at 1-866-860-0065 or visit mover.net
• A sticker would be applied to all existing posters with a message similar to the one above.
The members who were involved in the process felt that the ATB and its staff had made an excellent and timely effort in correcting the situation and providing a remedy.

EMPLOYMENT
CAM’s online database of job applicants is available in the members-only area of the website. Here you can find the following:
• Applicants for your driver, helper and staff positions arranged by position type and postal code. We have received over 1,000 applications from EI offices across Canada.
• Job ads for sales staff and other operations staff are posted at http://www.mover.net/employment/postings.htm. It currently contains a few postings for sales staff.
We have been overwhelmed with the response to our EI postings and are trying to process the incoming resumes. We will add to the data online over the next two weeks, so check back periodically.

JOB POSTING ON CAM’S WEBSITE
A leading van line agent in the Toronto area is looking for a new general manager. If you are interested, look at the ad on CAM’s website and apply in confidence to CAM. Your résumé will not be forwarded if the company is your current employer.

A LITTLE IRONY
Do you know about that website in The Netherlands that advertises moving services to consumers? It might surprise you to know that membership in CAM is one of their criteria for recommending Canadian moving services. You never know what your membership in the association will bring!

NEW MEMBERS
CAM welcomed three new members in April. Check them out in our online database. You will find they are good folks to do business with.
Movers
• Jay’s Moving & Storage, Regina, SK
• Premiere Van Lines, Barrie, ON

International Mover
• Avram Worldwide LLC, Greenwood, IN, USA

MOVES ONLINE
CAM has had 116 requests for referrals between February 1 and the end of April. The program will be continued at no cost to the end of May, at which time we will evaluate its costs and operations.

Vancouver portable Storage containers

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

When you’re considering storing all of your household effects, do you think about the cost of getting a truck and loading everything, then unloading it into a storage locker? Then when it comes time to move out, you have to reverse the whole process? That’s like doing two complete moves.

Why not consider Ferguson Moving & Storage portable storage containers?

We load our containers onto a portable truck, drive to your home and load everything into your containers. Then we simply forklift the containers into our 60000 sq ft warehouse. We save you time and money.

In addition, our containers include furniture pads. Why is this important? When you store all of your household belongings such as sofas, beds, dressers and chairs, they are stacked to maximize the use of space. If your furniture is stored with no protection, this means that you could scratch your furniture.

At Ferguson’s, all of you furniture remains wrapped in furniture blankets guaranteed until we redeliver your goods from storage.

We trust that when you compare Ferguson moving and storage’s services to that of any other company, you’ll agree that our understanding of professional moving services far exceeds that of most of our competition.

Don’t trust everything you own to just anybody, trust your house to only the best. Ferguson Moving & Storage.

since 1916 Ferguson is more than moving, it’s our legacy.

If I had to pick a Vancouver moving company, here’s what I would do.

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

As one of the owners of a moving company, I am often curious as to what makes people choose their movers.

I suppose there are many factors and they vary from person to person. Some people really want high end white glove movers that will look after everything. I’ve even bet there is a small market of people that would like to go on a cruise and let the movers handle everything. I mean even unpacking the boxes and placing everything away and hang the pictures too. Wouldn’t that be nice.

Then there are other customers that just want it moved. They see moving as an afterthought and that it really doesn’t matter that much on who does the job. This is often a crap shoot because the movers vary widely from place to place. After walls start to get damaged and furniture is broken, then they finally see the need to have made the right choice for movers.

I can tell people that we screenour staff, train them to be movers in our essential skill and development courses, use top notch equipment and provide full uniforms for our moving crews, plus our sales team provides in home estimates at no cost. I could also mention we offer rate guarantees and on time arrival guarantees.

To some of the population this matters and to others, it’s not terribly important.

I am proud to tell you that at Ferguson Moving & Storage, we do offer theses service guarantees because we want to move you so that you’ll be so happy with our services, you’ll become a 3rd party sales person for our company. If we can exceed your expectations, you’ll have no problem saying, call Ferguson Moving & Storage when a friend, collegue or family member asks you if you may know of a good moving company.

In conclusion, I would say the best way to choose a moving company is to ask your friends if they have used or heard of Ferguson Moving & Storage. If you hear good things, then schedule a free consultation. Ferguson Moving & Storage is much more than movers in Vancouver. After 94 years, Moving is our Legacy.

Vancouver Real Estate records bucking all trends

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

There’s only one city in North America other than Vancouver which has been bucking the trend when it comes to real estate pricing. That city is New York City. The similarities are staggering. A Vancouver 840 sq ft condo apartment now starts at $530,000. 00
The average house with 4 plus bedroom in Canada is moving for an average of $300000.00 Probably comes with a pool too.

So why is Vancouver so blessed/cursed depending what side of the fence you’re on? Well, it’s a factor of many things rather than just one. First of all, Vancouver is a pacific rim city. That means ports to asia and china. China is the worlds largest manufacturer so shipping is definitely a factor.

More importantly is quality of life in Vancouver. There are mountains, oceans, beaches, and high quality of hospital care. Also, Vancouver is the warmest city in Canada. It’s also one of the wettest. Yes Vancouver is a rain city with people moving in and out because of it.

Lastly, there’s a strong demand with little land. To the west is the ocean, to the east and north are the coastal mountains and to the south is the USA border. So the only places left to build are upward or seaward. Which probably will be a reality in the future.

If you own a home and are planning to sell, there’s never been a better time. Especially before the dreded HST hits everyone July 1st 2010.

Remember, if you do sell and need one of Vancouver’s best BC moving and Storage companies in Canada. Call the largest Canadian Family owned movers and storage firm to downtown Vancouver to move your home, condo or apartment.  Ferguson Moving & Storage 604-922-2212
