The Great Capilano Duck Splash

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Have you ever seen 16,000 rubber ducks dropped from a helicopter?!

Ferguson Moving and Storage is proud to be a GOLD sponsor of the 2011 Capilano Duck Splash, happening April, 10th over Ambleside Park in West Vancouver.

At approximately high noon, a helicopter will let loose its cargo sending 16,000 of these bathtub favourites into the waters below. They will then be retrieved by dogs from the Labrador Retriever Club, as anxious crowds gather in excitement to see if their ducks made the cut. If you happen to be the proud owner of one of the 13 selected, you will be awarded prizes varying from a diamond necklace to a luxury ten night cruise for two!

Ferguson Moving and Storage is happy to be providing the storage containers for our 16,000 yellow friends, as they wait in anticipation for their big day. We’re treating them as if they were any other piece of furniture in our everyday operations… which is to the highest industry standard in the surrounding area. After their big day, we will collect them up and provide them with a nice place to rest until the 2012 drop!

Take the time to go online and visit the Duck Splash website. Here you can purchase your own rubber friends, with proceeds benefiting the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, North Shore Rescue, North Shore Neighbourhood House, and the North Shore Crisis Services Society.

Once again, Ferguson Moving and Storage is proud to be a GOLD sponsor of the 2011 Capilano Duck Splash. We look forward to seeing everyone down at Ambleside Park on April, 11th… Quack Quack ~ Happy Flying!

urban area vancouver movers

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Are you considering moving to or from an urban vancouver area neighbourhood? There is a lot to plan and you’ll have to find a moving company that understands the urban area rush that comes with the territory.

Some things your movers will have to consider is parking permits, parking restrictions, elevator reservations, moving time restrictions, respecting the needs of others in the building, providing security for other tenants and security for items being moved onto the moving van.

There is also a speed component to urban rush moves that many moving companies miss out on. You can’t waste time on an urban rush move. You have to hustle and go quick and careful or else your deadlines will not be met.

In addition, most buildings have elevator fees and deposits. If your moving and storage company is late, then you could lose your elevator deposit. Even worse is if you are not moved out on time, the new owners could be trying to move in. If their movers are forced to wait because the condo is still full, then you’ll be paying for the downtime of movers you didn’t even hire!

You can relax if your moving company that you hired is Ferguson Moving & Storage, we have you covered with top quality staff that you can depend on. That’s why we’ve been in business longer than any other urban movers in vancouver.

Thanks for dropping by.

Perhaps you’re move is going to be 70% furniture and 30% boxes. Maybe you have a teenage son that has friends who will give a hand for a little bit of pocket money. This means we have rental trucks right in our parking lot.

We’ll not only show you how to pack boxes for your move, we’ll also give you tips to prepare for your specific moving needs to ensure that you’re ready for move day.

We want to be more than a moving company, our goal is to become your trusted advisor for arranging your move to meet your needs.

Experienced Vancouver Hotel Installers

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Ferguson moving and storage meticulously performs furniture installations for hotels, restaurants, theaters and other Vancouver venues.

Ferguson has been in business since 1916, we have been performing installation services for major venues since 2001.

Our services are customized to meet your demands for new construction projects or renovations. Ferguson’s staff will do what it takes to satisfy the needs of the most demanding jobs.

We will ensure that you are 100% satisfied with our services.

The Ferguson project team work very closely with other project managers and partners and our knowledge has proven to be sensual in preventing challenges with logistics and design issues.

For example in it to her of a construction site one of our managers noticed that the amount of hardware for assembling artwork would be inadequate compared to the amount of artwork that needed to be installed. This was important because the hardware was customized in a factory and shipping in large quantities required a two week waiting period. Since it was discovered, there was still six weeks until that hardware was required thus a potential delay was avoided. In another example or project manager was reviewing floor plans when he noticed there was a conflict between two floor plans for the hotel lobby. The designer was unavailable and the hotel was opening the next day. Our manager was asked to simply do the best he could setting up an entire lobby which included over 100 pieces of furniture.

When the designer of the Fairmont Pacific rim in Vancouver came to view the lobby she liked it so much she ordered it to stay that way. In another example our client had ordered artwork which had a light box to illuminate the artwork. The original team from the artwork company performed substandard installations and was terminated from the project. Our project managers were asked if we could take over the installation process of this complex artwork installation.

In the end, our teams installed over 400 hotel rooms including artwork, TVs, beds, headboards, nightstands, safes, hangers, refrigerators, mini bars, dressers, audio units, iPod docking stations and a complete pick and pack for everything from stir sticks, scales, coffeemakers, bathrobes and linens.

Ferguson moving and storage was awarded an install of 400 hotel rooms for the Fairmont Pacific rim located in Downtown Vancouver. The entire job was bid out for a nine week install thus lots of time was allowed to receive furniture from all manufacturers into our warehouse for inventory, sorting and staging.

Because of many construction delays during the Vancouver Olympics the owners of the building asked if we could perform 24-hour services with separate staff to avoid overtime fees as much as possible.

Our HR department hired additional crews with high skill levels to assist existing crews to help complete the job on time and on budget.

Working as a team our managers participated in morning conference calls with purchasers and managers of the Fairmont to complete the project before the opening ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.

This was extremely important so that registered guests of the Olympics including Arnold Schwarzenegger and dignitaries from countries around the world would not have to be turned away. We feel that our hands-on approach can help all people involved in major hotel construction and renovations.

Our crews perform turnkey installations, artwork and mirror installations.

Ferguson designs moves with unique storage solution at renovation show

When renovating a home, it is not often thought that someone should design the move.  Luckily, Ferguson Moving and Storage is one company that has thought of that, and did well to appear at the Vancouver Home and Interior Design Show, letting people know that furniture could serve a problem when trying to knock down walls and splash paint everywhere.

“A lot of browsers were surprised that a moving company was in the GVHBA, because most people forget about what to do with their furniture when it comes time to renovate,” explained Wayne Keeler, sales manager at Ferguson Moving and Storage Ltd.

The moving company’s presence was not small felt either – they stood as renovation ambassadors for the Greater Vancouver Home Builder’s Association (GVHBA), which had one of the biggest displays at the event.  It was so large, Keeler said there was no need to draw people over using other methods, though they did give away brochures and business cards.

The event was held by the GVHBA, a booming organization with Ty Pennington, host of the hit TV show Extreme Makeovers: Home Edition, as its spokesperson.  Keeler was there to “explain the importance of top qualified professionals in this industry to belong to an organization such has the GVHBA.”  In other words, when you hire an expert to renovate your home, you’ll want to be at rest knowing they’ve got a professional handling your furniture.

“Most qualified contractors or renovators do not like to keep furniture in the house during new construction or renovations,” explained Keeler.

Ferguson’s unique storage containers were the highlight of the day.  Since they can be loaded onsite, and then simply put away until remodeling is done, less handling of furniture takes place, making sure items come back the same way they left.

“It is not touched again until we deliver it back to them,” said Keeler.  “We don’t have to deliver the furniture to another storage room after it leaves their home so, in the end, less handling means lesser chance of damage.”

Though this was Ferguson’s first tradeshow of the year, the success of the exhibit and appreciation of attendees means they’ll be back again, even as soon as this Spring, when the GVHBA holds their next event.

Making that new office a stunning thing to look at

Friday, October 17th, 2008

When moving an office, take advantage of the opportunity to make things more productive, and to add a little flare to your workspace.  Moving an office is stressful, but think of it as a positive event that will give you an excuse to improve your business and a sign that you’re growing – which means you’re heading in the right direction.

First, you’ll have to take care of all the practical things.  Make sure the phone lines are hooked up and the wiring for your Internet connections are in their right places.  For this, you’ll have to pre-consider where employees will sit and how large their desks and work areas will be.  Measuring tape could never have a better application – be as precise as possible BEFORE the move in day, so things will go smooth when you all arrive and begin settling in.

When you arrange furniture, imagine what your daily working life will be like.  Where will the printers, copiers and fax machines go?  Keep them in a central location where they can be within reach of all departments, or otherwise near offices of a work station.  Consider where the electrical outlets are.  If certain employees conduct constant outreach to customers, they should be in a place separate from those who work on the back end, to avoid nuisances and disturbances.  On the other hand, it wouldn’t be wise to put the incoming calls desk near a lunch room that may produce strange background noises over the phone.  If customers walk into your office, make sure people’s desks are arranged so that they are facing the entrance and can easily greet new faces for better service standards.

Most office furniture comes in standard colors and shapes, but there are ways to make your office unique for both showing off to guests and making employees feel as though they’re working for a dynamic company.  Here are some things to consider when decorating and furnishing:

  • Desks – it’s not hard to find unique styles by going to specialty stores that are not traditionally used for furnishing offices.  Some have glass surfaces which is a colour that won’t go out of style too soon.  Don’t opt for overly bright colours just because they’re in style now.  Trends change often, so it’s better to go with tradition.
  • Cubicles – some come in colours other than gray, but remember to see if they can be posted on easily, since some employees may have to put things up, like calendars or checklists.
  • Lighting – different personalities in the work place will appreciate different shades of light.  The really technical who need to look at a computer screen all day will probably opt for something dim, whereas the idea-generators (architects, designers, etc.) will likely prefer more natural sunlight.  The meeting board room will need a variety of lighting for both conversation and viewing a screen for power points and/or other computerized presentations.  Instead of going for the bulbs that come with building, take on lamps and dimmers as well.
  • Paint – take a colour you like (not beige), and go down a few shades to make it neutral and long lasting.  For bolder colours, only splash one wall in a room, leaving the others at an off-white, which will be easier on the eye and brain concentration than plain white alone.  Use paint to give the office a ‘homey’ feel.
  • Chairs – make them comfortable, for the sake of your employees and their long hours.  Usually black will go with anything, so you can move them around to different offices as needed.

Finally, consider upgrades to your computer systems and software.  Since you’re making the move anyway, getting rid of old, outdated screens to replace with newer equipment may be worth the extra half mile.  This will truly give a ‘new’ feel to your new beginning at the new office, not to mention increasing your productivity and standard of operation.
