How to go green with when packing to move

How often do we consider the planet when we think about packing up to move our households?  As community citizens concerned about our environment and a healthy future for our children, it’s no wonder we’re turning to eco sustainable lifestyles wherever possible.  From recycling paper to buying the latest in ‘green’ fads, we as consumers are showing that although we’re not about to start an environmental protest, we do care about the planet and our health.

Surprisingly, moving can be a big resource waster.  Think about it.  Using cardboard boxes (even if you got them from the grocery store, it’s still paper that’s going to be broken down and sent to another energy-consuming recycling facility).  Using wrapping paper.  Using plastic bubble wrap.  Using petroleum to drive truckloads of our stuff across town.

A little creativity is all it takes to have a green move!

Use Frogboxes:  If you are in the Greater Toronto or Vancouver areas, or even in Seattle Washington, you’re in luck.  Frogbox is a service that will drop off reusable, perfectly stackable, sturdy boxes to your home on loan until you are done with your move, then take them back to be reused.  They don’t require tape, and save a lot of time, which means less cost on the hourly charge of hiring movers.

Use your suitcases:  We reuse them for traveling all the time, why not use them for moving?  These are great places to store clothing and softer items.  Ask to borrow from friends instead of using up more boxes for clothes that won’t fit into the suitcases you already have.

Use household items wisely:  There are ways to avoid the high usage of plastic and packing paper.  You can protect your fragile and easily breakable items by wrapping them in clothing or in your towels, for example.  Fabric won’t get ruined, and can easily be put back into a drawer when you’re done using them for protection.  Same goes with couch cushions instead of foam to pad your furniture in the truck.

Blankets are good:  Whether you use household blankets or special moving blankets to cover your furniture before the movers arrive, you are being eco-friendly and still protecting your furniture at the same time because blankets can, of course, be re-used.  The benefits of moving blankets is that they are specially made to protect furniture from scratches, bumps and weather.

Use rope, not tape:  When the occasion arises to tie or seal things up, you can use rope instead of creating trash by using tape.  The rope can simply be rolled up after you’re done with it and stored for use another time, like when you go camping this summer!

Hold a garage sale:  There are two reasons this is a great choice:  a) you’ll make money while helping others discover your hidden treasures that would otherwise be trashed and b) you won’t have to waste time or gas moving the junk to your new home.

Fill up the truck the first time:  If you pack the truck properly, or better yet, get professional movers to do it for you, you will be able to fit in more things and possibly avoid having to do a second round of transporting, or renting an additional truck.  Moving trucks take up a lot of gas, which we all know is not good for the environment.

While the above are guidelines, you will inevitably find that your move may require you to rebel against your eco friendly pledge at times.  That’s ok.  Remember, it’s one step at a time, and all the little things add up.  You WILL make a difference by using that much less tape, and by sacrificing your sweaters to protect your Royal Albert dining set!

how to make moving a hasslefree activity

Out of all of life’s most stressful things you have to do by far moving to another place is one of the most stressful. I recall over a year ago when we had to move, I must say, that it was one of the most tiring experiences in my entire life, because there was so much to do I didn’t know where to begin. We had to move everything all of our stuff, the cars, and arranging practically everything for our new destination. However, that entire experience would have been much more hassle if we did not use a professional moving company. These days, there are moving companies everywhere that offer moving services which will lessen your burden, time and energy. Most of these companies, are willing to help you in every way possible.

One of the most un-enjoyable things when I have to move, as all of the packing and unpacking. This is very stressful even from working together with your family to accomplish this goal. What I found is that I was rushing through all of our belongings and quickly throwing away things I felt we no longer needed. However, my wife would find things she hadn’t seen in years such as an old photograph and would reminisce about the day that photograph was taken. Even though I wanted to enjoy the moment of experiencing that photograph, a certain part of me became frustrated that the sorting process was grinding to a halt.

My wife and I discussed that we might be moving to a new house because the one that we currently live in is quite small. When we originally moved into the house it seemed quite large, however when you add three children to the house and they don’t stop growing the house becomes very small, very fast!

It is already been a couple of months since we’ve moved and I am so glad that while we were packing our own belongings, my wife and I began to argue. It’s not that I like to argue with my wife, however it did cause us to look at other options instead of moving ourselves. We began to ask around to people that we knew who had moved and we talked to our real estate agent as well. We discovered that the only thing that could make this move go smooth and simple was to contact companies like ferguson moving and storage, they are Vancouver movers who are there to help everyone moving residentially and commercially. I kept having to go and pick up boxes but their location was so close to my house only about 10 minutes from downtown Vancouver that I could go several times and the staff was always so willing to accommodate me. I must have drove them nuts because we changed the move date three or four times and every time I went in to pick up boxes I had many questions but they put up with me and answered all of them.

We actually started planning the move long time before we moved and we had looked at movers far in advance. Our move was scheduled for March and we started getting estimates submitted and making phone calls as far back as December the reason that we decided to move ourselves was to try and save a buck, but after our disagreements money was no longer did determining factor, our marriage was.

On move day I was so amazed at the speed of ferguson moving and storage the movers themselves were so easy-going and professional handing complete uniform. The supervisor of the move explained all the details to me about how the move would go, what items would need to go first etc. All of our beds had to be dismantled and all of our furniture was blanket wrapped in shrink-wrapped in the house right before our eyes. I even had some furniture that I wasn’t sure how to turn how to take apart, but the movers had complete toolboxes and lucky for me that particular crew had dealt with my type of furniture before.

In case you’re also out there thinking that you’re just going to move yourself, you should take a realistic look at what move day will actually be like. Do you want to be angry all day? If not I highly recommend avoiding procrastination, and spending a few hours reviewing movers, and selecting the one that most suits your needs.

Oh right, the clothes have to move too

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

When moving, we often think of the big things; furniture, books, plates, artwork…but neglect the closet!  And to think we approach it every day to get dressed… Well, surely you’ll need to put on some clothes after moving into your new home, and that task will probably be higher on your list of priorities than unpacking china at the start of operation settle-in.

There are many ways to get your clothes moved over to your new closet.  They’ve all got their pros and cons, so chose the method that suits your personality, and situation, the best.

Wardrobe boxes.  These are top-notch. For the things that absolutely can’t get wrinkled, like business or special event clothing, getting a few wardrobe boxes are a must.  Get the whole family to share the space in these to save a few pennies. The video above shows how to pack a wardrobe carton.

Suitcases.  This is probably the best way to transport clothing – after all, this is what they were designed for.  In this case, pack as you would for a vacation, only don’t worry so much about layering and having enough undies for the trip.  Just keep things organized, and label if necessary so you’ll know where to find things when you need to unpack.  Also remember to roll, not fold, to increase the space capacity.  This method will keep clothes safe, but won’t help with wrinkles, so not recommended for fancy things like suites or ball gowns.

No matter what method you use, remember the following:

Keep clothes organized and labeled. This will help your unpacking project at the other end of the tunnel.

Secure the packing job.  Use tape to seal boxes and tie plastic bags so that clothes don’t go flying all over the place during the move.

Remember to bring enough to wear on the trip.  If your move will take a few days, keep a smaller bag of clothing that will be sufficient to keep you dressed and feeling clean on the way.  Don’t accidentally pack everything away and bury it deep within the truck, where you won’t have access to it for a looong time.
