A BRIEF HISTORY AND HELPFUL CONTACT INFORMATION FOR CHILLIWACK, BRITISH COLUMBIA

The City of Chilliwack is located on the Trans-Canada Highway, 100 km east of Vancouver and 15 km
east of Abbotsford. Approximately 40 km southwest of Chilliwack lies Sumas, Washington, one of the
main Customs Ports of Entry at the Canada/U.S. Border.
Chilliwack has an average January temperature of 1.6°C and an average July temperature of 18°C. The
average annual precipitation is 1,727.8 mm.
The population of Chilliwack numbers approximately 72, 621.

IN THE BEGINNING
The Chilliwack area was settled as early as 1856, when Volkerk Vedder of New York State began
promoting its agricultural possibilities. The first land pre-emptions were granted in 1862 and the
Township of Chilliwack was incorporated in 1873. By 1883, the area known as Centreville, the hub of
the Chilliwack Valley, was incorporated as a village, later to become the City of Chilliwack in 1908.
In 1911, the B.C. Electric tram service connected Chilliwack to Vancouver, followed in 1913 by the
Canadian Northern Railway, which linked Chilliwack with the rest of Canada. This established and
promoted growth in the agricultural sector.

CHILLIWACK TODAY
Chilliwack lies along the banks of the mighty Fraser River, in the heart of the lush Upper Fraser Valley,
one of Canada’s richest agricultural areas. Chilliwack contains some of the most productive farmland in
British Columbia. Agriculture, along with the processing of the produce is a major economic
component. Chilliwack is also the retail heart of the region with a wide array of goods available.
ATTRACTIONS
Chilliwack Museum – Housed in the former city hall this museum holds records and artifacts from the
area’s past.
Annual Events – Chilliwack is host to numerous annual festivities including Canada Day Celebrations in
July, Chilliwack Exhibition in August, the Bluegrass Festival in September and the Parade of Lights in
December.
Salish Park – Located in the heart of downtown Chilliwack, the park offers a stocked pond, gardens and
tennis and basketball courts.

Trails – The city maintains numerous trails ideal for hiking and biking including the Rotary Vedder River
Trail (15.5km), the Hope River Trail (6.2km) and Mount Thom, a trail to the summit.
Minter Gardens – Built around the remains of an ancient rockslide, this 27 acre park includes 11 themed
gardens.
Chilliwack Farmers Market – Held during the months of June to September, on Saturdays from 9:00 am –
3:00 pm. Vendors include fresh produce, baked goods and crafts.
