The City of White Rock is situated on Semiahmoo Bay, in the southwest corner of the lower mainland.
White Rock is located on Highway #99, approximately 45 km southeast of Vancouver and minutes from
the Canada/US border.

White Rock has a relatively low annual rainfall and high sunshine totals. The
average January temperature is 6°C and average July temperature is 23°C.

The population of White Rock numbers approximately 18,250.

HISTORY

During the early 1800’s settlers came by land and sea to settle on the shores of Semiahmoo Bay.
With the establishment of the Great Northern Railway at the turn of the century, came the development of
a commercial centre. Industrial and residential growth followed. In 1910 the first post office
opened, followed in 1913 with a customs and immigration office.

In 1914 a 1,540 foot pier was constructed and this landmark remains to this day. The city
officially adopted the name White Rock in 1957. The pioneers called the area White Rock because of
the 400 ton white rock on the beach that was used by sailors as a navigational aid.

ATTRACTIONS

The Peace Arch Provincial Park stands at the western end of the 3,000 mile undefended Canada/US
border. People from both countries may use any part of it without going through customs. It is
maintained jointly by the Province of B.C.and the State of Washington.

Centennial Park – The largest park in White Rock offers, a playground, baseball diamonds, soccer
fields, tennis courts and walking trails.

Annual Events – White Rock is host to numerous annual festivities including, Canada Day
Celebrations and Tour de White Rock in July, the Spirit of the Sea Festival in August and the
Waterfront Concert Series during the months of July and August.

White Rock Farmers Market – The market is held during the months of May to October on Sundays from
9:00 am – 1:00 pm. Vendors include fresh produce, baked goods, flowers and crafts.

White Rock Beach and Promenade – A 2.2 promenade ideal for strolling by the waterfront, with cafes
and a sandy beach.
The White Rock Museum and Archives – This museum traces the history and culture in White Rock.

The Resort Municipality of Whistler is located approximately 120 km north of Vancouver
and approximately 56 km north of Squamish. Whistler is situated along Highway #99, which runs directly
from Vancouver to Squamish to Whistler.

While rainfall is minimal here, snowfall is abundant. Whistler receives approximately 430.5 cm of
snow in the valley and 914 cm in the alpine, annually. The average summer temperature is 18°C and
the average winter temperature is –5°C.

The population of the Resort Municipality of Whistler numbers approximately 9,595.

WHISTLER AT A GLANCE

Located 668 meters above sea level in the Coastal Mountains, Whistler provides fabulous skiing
facilities at the Whistler, Blackcomb and Wedge Mountain. The Whistler area has some of the best
skiing in North America. It features the Blackcomb Mountain Peak at 2,084 metres and Whistler
Mountain Peak at 2,182 metres. There are more than 60 runs with the largest run being 7 miles
long. The area also features cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

Garibaldi Park is a large provincial park, capable of accommodating tents and/or trailers (winter
or summer). During the warmer months, Whistler is a great area for fishing, horseback riding,
tennis, boating and golf featuring an 18 hole Arnold Palmer designed course.

Whistler Village is a pedestrian only village, featuring entertainment, intriguing shops and cozy
bistros.

ATTRACTIONS

Farmers Market – The market is held on Sundays from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm during the months of June to
October. Vendors include organic and local produce, jams, honey and baked goods.

Annual Events – Whistler is host to numerous annual festivities including the Children’s Art
Festival and the Kokanee Crankworx in July, Whistler Film Festival in December and the Whistler
Winter Arts Festival in February.

Valley Trail- A 35 km multi purpose paved trail ideal for walking, hiking and biking.

Whistler Museum – The museum houses exhibits, filled with artifacts and photographs tracing the
history of Whistler and the surrounding area.

Whistler Village Park – This park is situated in the heart of the village, with three sections
connected by a brick walkway.

The District of Maple Ridge is located a 45 km east of Vancouver, along Highway #7. Maple Ridge is
situated on the north shore of the Fraser River, against the Golden Ears Mountains. The community
of Pitt Meadows is directly west of Maple Ridge.

Maple Ridge has an average summer temperature of 25°C and an average winter temperature of 3°C. The
average annual precipitation is 1,150 mm

The population of Maple Ridge numbers approximately 68,949.

HISTORY

The area’s first inhabitants were the Katzie and Whonnock First Nations. They lived and hunted the
land for centuries before the first settlers arrived.

Fewer than 50 families came to build the community of Maple Ridge in 1874. Many of the settlers
worked for the Hudson Bay Company trading post at Fort Langley. In 1885 the railway came through
and attracted more people to the area. Two Scottish-born settlers John McIver and Samuel Robertson
were successful at turning their claims into workable farmland. McIver started the area’s first
daily farm. He named his farm Maple Ridge because beautiful Maple trees surrounded the farm.

TODAY

The stable economy of Maple Ridge is based mainly on agriculture. Maple Ridge has a long
frost-free growing season. Other industries that support the economy are fishing and forestry, especially in
wood processing.

ATTRACTIONS

Maple Ridge Park – The park is situated on the South Alouette River and offers a hiking trail,
picnic area, spray park and a playground.

Maple Ridge Museum – Housed in a home built in 1907, the museum offers a look at pioneer life
through artifacts set up in a home environment.

Fraser River Heritage Walk – The path begins at Port Haney Wharf and wanders through the community
ending at the museum.

Haney Farmers Market – Held on Saturdays during the months of May-October, from 9:00 am – 2:00
pm. Vendors include fresh produce and baked goods.

Annual Events – Maple Ridge is host to numerous annual festivities including the Maple Ridge
Mountain Festival in May, the Blueberry Festival in August, the Ridge Meadows Agricultural Fair in July and

The Corporation of Delta is comprised of three communities Ladner, North Delta and Lander. Ladner
is the oldest of the communities and is situated on the banks of the Fraser River. Ladner is located
along Highway #17, approximately 27 km south of Vancouver.

The population of the Corporation of Delta numbers approximately 102,939. The population of Delta
numbers approximately 20,000.

YESTERDAY AND TODAY

Founded in 1882 the community of Ladner was named after Thomas and William Ladner, two brothers who
initiated the beginning of the community of Delta. Ladner’s Landing, as it was first called, was
the hub of a thriving fishing and farming community. It maintained its status as an important
canning centre on the Fraser River, an industry which employed mainly Natives and Chinese.

From its peak during the 1900’s the canning industry rapidly declined, partly due to heavy silting
caused by the Fraser River Floods in 1891 and 1895. This led to the dyking and drainage project,
which resulted in a largely expanded agricultural industry. During this time the fishing industry
also thrived.

Today, Ladner’s agricultural and fishing industries are a continuing tradition. Even to this day
Ladner is the administrative centre for Delta. Many turn-of-the-century buildings are still in use
for various purposes. One of the earlier municipal halls is now Delta’s museum.

SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS

Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary – This estuary, with its rich food source, attracts 1.5 million
birds annually. During the winter months there are flocks of up to 25,000 Snow Geese from the
Arctic.

Deas Island Regional Park – This popular park offers 5 km of forested trails along the Fraser River
and picnic areas.

Delta Museum and Archives – The museum offers programs and exhibits that trace the history of the
surrounding area.

Annual Events – Delta is host to numerous annual festivities including North Delta Family Day in
June,
Ladner Pioneer Day in May and Tsawwassen Sun Festival in August.

In 1995 the District of Matsqui, Abbotsford and the Village of Clearbrook amalgamated to create the
new City of Abbotsford. Abbotsford is surrounded by the Fraser River to the north, the American border
to the south, Langley to the west and Chilliwack to the east.

Abbotsford is approximately 70 km southeast of downtown Vancouver, by means of the Trans-Canada
Highway #1 or the Fraser Highway #1A. Situated in the Lower Fraser Valley, Abbotsford is one of
the most productive agricultural areas in British Columbia.

The population of Abbotsford numbers approximately 123,864.

HISTORY

After gold was discovered in the Fraser River the British sent Royal Engineers to survey the area.
John Cunningham Maclure purchased 160 acres in 1889, which would eventually become the village of
Abbotsford. He later sold the land to his son who in turn sold it to Robert Ward. Ward filed for
town site subdivision in 1891. Abbotsford was named after a friend of the Maclure family, Harry
Abbott. Abbott was the Western Superintendent of the C.P.R.

When the C.P.R. spur line reached Abbotsford the area opened up economically. May saw mills were
built between 1890-1919. The establishment of the Abbotsford Lumber Company by the Tretheway
Family helped the development of Abbotsford in every way.

LIFE IN ABBOTSFORD

Abbotsford is the commercial and regional hub for the Fraser Valley. The economy of Abbotsford is
based on agriculture, transportation, precision manufacturing and retail. In recent years, because
of the beautiful surroundings tourism is becoming an important component in the economy.

The City of Langley is situated in the eastern portion of the Greater Vancouver Regional District.
Langley is located on Highway #1A and Highway #10, approximately 45 km southeast of the City of
Vancouver. The city is bounded on the north by the Fraser River and on the south by the Canadian-
American border.

Langley has an average July temperature of 16.7°C and an average January temperature of 2.2°C. The
average annual precipitation is 1,486.9 mm.

The population of Langley is approximately 23,606.

HISTORY

Fort Langley, a Hudson Bay Co. post built in 1829 and now restored, was British Columbia’s first
capital. The city was named after Hudson Bay Co. director, Thomas Langley.

The area had an economy based largely on agriculture, with Langley City being its trade and service
centre. In the early 1960s, the development of the Trans-Canada Highway improved access to the
city and surrounding area. Land suited for subdivision led to a residential
construction boom. Large industrial estates have drawn numerous manufacturing and warehousing
operations and made Langley a regional commercial and industrial centre.

ATTRACTIONS

Sendall Gardens – A 3.67 acre botanical garden with flowers, unique plants, trees and
a tropical greenhouse.

Douglas Park – This popular community park offers a waterpark, tennis courts, playground and picnic
area. The park is also host to many community events.

City Park – This park offers a swimming pool, sports facilities and picnic areas.

Annual Events – Langley is host to numerous annual community events including the Langley Country
Days and Jazz and Blues Festival in June, Canada Day Celebrations in July and the Arts Alive
Festival in August.

Market in the Park – This farmers market is held during the months of June to August, on Saturdays
from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, at Douglas Park. Vendors include fresh produced, baked goods and crafts.

Langley Centennial Museum – Artifacts, photographs and work of art trace the history of Langley and
the surrounding area.

HISTORY

The Coast Salish First Nations communities lived along the southern coast of British Columbia long
before the Europeans settled in the area. Two of the tribes, the Squamish and Muskevian came to
Port Moody during the summer months to hunt and fish in preparation for the winter.

Two main dates are important in the history of Port Moody. In 1858 the Gold Rush started and the
influx of prospectors to the Fraser Valley created the need to develop new service areas. Port
Moody was named for Col. Richard Moody, the BC land commissioner who selected the site for New
Westminster. In 1886 the first transcontinental rail line came through Port Moody.

TODAY

Even though Port Moody has 30,000 people it actually services an area of 350,000. The city is
well connected by rapid transit, rail, major highways, and a deep-sea port. Port Moody is only 45
minutes from the international airport and the US border.

ATTRACTIONS

Golden Spike Days – Annual festival held during the Canada Day long weekend, includes
entertainment, special events and great food.

Port Moody Arts Centre – Housed in the original City Hall, which was built in 1913 the centre
traces the history of the area as well as displaying art exhibits.

Port Moody Station Museum – House in the western terminus of the CPR, the museum holds artifacts
tracing the history of Port Moody and the surrounding area.

Shoreline Park System and Trail – A waterfront park area that includes a 3 km horseshoe shaped
trail, ideal for walking and hiking.

The City of Toronto is the capital of Ontario. The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) includes

The Greater Toronto Area has a population of approximately 2, 503,281.

FORT YORK

Metropolitan Toronto originated in 1793. John Graves Simcoe selected the site and Fort York was
constructed to protect the colonial seat of British Government in Upper Canada. Earlier, in 1749,
French settlers from Quebec had built Fort Rouille on land, which is now Exhibition Park. They
destroyed it a few years later due to the frequent raids by both Indians and British.

York grew slowly around its military and political functions. Loyalists from the United States and
immigrants from Great Britain and Europe came to York. Lumber and meat were shipped out through
the port and financial and commercial institutions were established in the town and contributed to
its expansion.

By 1843, York and the area to the north, “The Liberties”, had grown to 9,000 people and as a result
of an act passed by the provincial legislature, the City of Toronto was incorporated. The name
Toronto is derived from the Huron word for “meeting place”. In 1850, the Townships of York,
Scarborough and Etobicoke were incorporated to the north, east and west respectively of the City of
Toronto, determining the outer boundaries of what is now the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto.

LIFE IN THE CITY

Toronto is one of Canada’s busiest and diverse cities. It is Canada’s corporate capital, with the
most national and international top-ranked companies in the country. Toronto is also
one of the most important financial and transportation centres in Canada and home of the
Provincial Parliament.

The city draws over 16 million tourists a year, with 88,000 jobs related to the tourist industry.
Toronto is home to an exciting cultural and recreational life. Within the boundaries of the GTA,
it is possible to visit over 100 museums and public archives including the Royal Ontario Museum and
the Art Gallery of Ontario. View performances in ballets, operas, symphonies and plays at the Sony
Center, Roy Thomson Hall, Royal Alexandra and the Princess of Wales Theatres. Shop in the Eaton

Hockey Hall of Fame – Located in the heart of downtown Toronto, this museum/hall of fame traces the
history of ice hockey and honours the best in the sport through exhibits and interactive displays.

Art Gallery of Ontario – The AGO’s collection contains more than 24,000 works representing 1,000
years of European, Canadian, modern and contemporary art.

Canadian National Exhibition – The CNE is held for two weeks at the end of each summer, at the
grounds of Exhibition Place. Attractions include a midway, games and agricultural competitions.

Ontario Science Centre – A place for adults and children alike, the Science Centre has more than
800 exhibits in 13 exhibit halls.

Ontario Place – A 96 acre leisure and entertainment parkland. Attractions include rides,
waterpark, the Molson amphitheatre and the Cinesphere (an IMAX theatre).

Royal Ontario Museum – The ROM is Canada’s largest museum and features galleries in art,
archaeology and science.

Rogers Centre – An all-season venue where events can be held in a climate-controlled environment or
an open-air stadium, it is the world’s first and only stadium to have a fully retractable roof.
The Rogers Centre is the home of the Toronto Blue Jays (American Baseball League) and the Toronto
Argonauts (Canadian Football League).

Toronto Zoo – 287 hectares parkland divided into geographical regions. The home of over 5,000
animals housed in indoor and outdoor pavilions.

Toronto Islands – A short ferry ride from the bottom of Yonge Street leads to the Hanlan’s, Ward’s
and Centre Islands. Ideal for strolling, bike riding and picnic lunches. Centre
Island also offers an amusement park.

St. Lawrence Market – Considered by Food and Wine Magazine to be one of the worlds 25 best food
markets, the St Lawrence is located in the heart of Old Town Toronto and offers fresh produce,
